Synopsis

Matter of course is a performance that looks at parallel realities, meaning different realities that exist simultaneously next to each other. The piece is humorous, self-aware and absurd. It creates a wide selection of different worlds on stage where sensory experiences change rapidly from scene to scene. For example under a blue water like tarp the performers sing in a serene like manner from which they suddenly change their body language to a violent bashing around of their bodies. Humour creeps into different sections of the piece as the performers execute everyday tasks in peculiar ways. The piece plays with symbolism and utilises the human need to create meaning for things. The plethora of information on stage puts under inspection the superficiality and importance of subjective perspective.

The creative process

Matter of course premiered in June 2022 at Resolution festival at The Place theatre in London. After that the piece was part of Mini-festival and was performed at The Prince Pub. Due to the guidelines of the performance locations matter of course was developed into a 25 minute long piece. As a next step the working group will develop the piece into a full-length (60min) performance at the Kuusamo Arctic Residence during May and August -23. During the residency the working group wants to delve deeper into developing a multisensory experience for the audience. They want to find different ways of demonstrating the concept of parallel realities for example by incorporating video- and projection elements as part of the piece.
