Murmurations

by Flor Riverti & Jule Niekamp
A duet for theatre

Synopsis

Murmurations is a new dance creation by Jule Niekamp and Flor Riverti in the format of a duet that explores different ideas around the concept of connection through physical, emotional and durational elements.

It plays with imagery, intimacy, intersubjectivity and different ways people can be connected to one another, focusing on shared rhythms as key to connection and communal sensations.

Looking at how connection is projected to the outside eye the piece questions and enhances our minds' reaction to automatically forming a story and questioning the relationship when watching two people being together. With this, creating an experience that invites the viewer to be an active part of the piece.

The creative process

For the piece our main inspiration comes from imagery, how pictures can inform feelings through movement and costumes depicted and how we can translate these feelings into performance.

We are interested in the visualities that the concept of connection holds. The two representations we want to research in detail are moving in parallel/synchronicity and touch through interlacing & contact.

In the context of physical connection we are interested in how it influences our emotional connection. We are looking at shared rhythms that fuel intersubjectivity through beats and movements carried out in common. Emotional connection is also brought forward by eye contact between performers and performers and audience, also through choreographic conditions that generate expectations. We are interested in how the audience is influenced by all of the above and our own connection to the audience while performing.

In regards to the durational elements of the piece we are using repetition and longer pauses that allow time to decompress and establish an environment in which time is not linear.

For the movement we are focusing on three main components; walking, dancing and physical touch. Beyond that we want to look at intimacy as a form of being connected to someone and how connection is projected to the outside eye. How we are influenced when watching two people being together we automatically form a story about them, questioning their relationship.

We want to bring an experience to the theatre, not just a show. Thus, something we are interested in and want to take on us to create, is exploring connection to engage the imagination of the audience and enact feelings. Feeling connection is more relevant than ever in this fractured world. Feeling connected through collective attention which is brought by watching and experiencing a performance together, is what we want to bring into the space.

So far, we have developed a first draft of our explorations and performed it in connection to a residency in S’ALA Spazio per artist* (IT), and did further research and performances through the support of Creative re-work (UK) and Ugly Duck Seeding space (UK).

We are keen to develop the piece and bring our research together into a finished piece which we can perform at festivals in Summer 2025.
